Cleaning out Closets for Fall

I always get excited to swap out my summer clothes for fall clothes as soon as school season starts back up. It also usually leads me to purging out things from previous seasons from my closet, and I always feel refreshed when I de-clutter.  If you’re preparing for a senior session or changing out your own wardrobe, it’s a good time to get rid of things that don’t fit or that could be better served in someone else’s closet. Here are some questions to ask as you purge or donate things you don’t use anymore:

  • Does this fit me? Sometimes, it’s easy to grab a size that doesn’t really fit because it’s on sale. If the item has never fit you and you’ve had it for quite some time, it is probably time to let it go. If it’s something that is expensive or dressy, you might consider alterations to help it fit better.
  • Did I just buy this because it was on sale? If you are holding onto something because it was a good deal and you don’t really love it, let it go!
  • Do I know someone who might love this? If you have a friend in a similar size or style that you know could use clothes, pass on anything you don’t keep to them and let the clothes be worn instead of sitting in a closet.
  • Do I feel really good in this outfit/item? If there is something that just never worked about the shoes/outfit/item, chances are that you won’t ever wear it often enough to justify keeping it. Sometimes that is because a shoe pinches or rubs, or a dress is itchy…get rid of those items.
  • Is this item practical for the climate where I live? If you live somewhere warm or cool, you may not need items like snow coats or river shoes…if you’ve only used an item on vacation or when you were somewhere else, you probably can get rid of it and shop secondhand for it when you need it.
  • Could I earn some money by re-selling this? If you have expensive items like purses or shoes that you aren’t wearing, check Poshmark to see how much they’re going for. If they’re in good shape, you might be able to make a little bit of money by selling them, and be able to put that money towards something useful or practical that you need.
