Five Ways to Unplug from Digital Life

It’s true that we live in a digital age! But, the onslaught of texting, Facebook, Instagram, and social media can leave us feeling emptier and more alone than ever. I really have seen the amazing ways that technology can consume my time and energy, and I work hard to make sure I can find balance in my own life. As a photographer and someone with a family, I really try to unplug occasionally, in order to keep my priorities straight and help focus my creative energy on my craft. Here are five ways you can also keep your phone from taking over your time:

  1. Turn off your devices an hour before you go to bed. Instead of scrolling endlessly until you fall asleep, try reading or listening to music with headphones or a speaker. Doing screen-free activities can help your brain slow down and prepare for rest. Dim your bedroom lights and help calm yourself with meditation or prayer, and your body will drift off to sleep much easier!
  2. Limit your email inboxes: Lots of us have several email addresses. Instead of syncing them all to your phone, save only your most urgent addresses (like school or work) to your phone, and the rest on your computer. Then, you can check and respond to emails that don’t demand immediate action on your own time.
  3. Turn off push notifications: You don’t need an alert every time someone comments or messages you, in most instances. Turning off alerts can help you not receive so many, and can also free up your time. I try to set certain times for me to check my personal Facebook or Instagram page, and it helps me focus on work and not get distracted.
  4. Commit to putting down your phone one place at a time: To help purge electronics from every moment of your life, try eliminating one place you use your phone each week. For example, commit to not using your phone in the drive-thru or in line at the store. Do this for a week, then add another place, like when you’re watching tv, to the list. Pretty soon, you will adjust to not picking it up at every quiet moment.
  5. Connect with a real person: When you are tempted to waste time on your phone or computer, try scheduling a coffee date or brunch with a real-life friend. Investing your time in real relationships will help you unplug in your life, and will improve your real friendships!

Getting used to not being on social media 24/7 is a big adjustment, but it is so much healthier for your mind and spirit! Of course, keeping in touch with friends and family is the way of the future, but balance is key!
