Benefits to Journaling for Self Care
I love a good journaling session. When things feel uncertain, it’s a great way to relieve stress, and also to look at the growth I’ve made in my life. Here are some benefits to journaling for self-care, even if you’re not a “writer”:
-It is inexpensive: You can journal with just a plain notebook! It is a very inexpensive way to take care of yourself, and you can do it anywhere. I like to even tuck a little notebook in my purse or bag to jot down thoughts when I have a moment. Some people even use their notes app or voice memos to keep track of thoughts when they are out and about so they can transfer them into a traditional journal.
-It is relaxing: It is really relaxing to use your own handwriting to journal your thoughts. If you’re into doing hand-lettering, you may consider getting a dot journal where there is more space to do some fun lettering on the pages.
-It is something personal: Journaling can be anything from making simple lists or goals, to working through challenges or trauma through writing. Don’t be intimidated if you don’t feel like you are doing therapy sessions with yourself, it can take time to dig deep if that’s your goal, and it’s okay if you’re simply processing day to day life. There is no wrong way to journal your thoughts.
-There are many beautiful journals to choose from: I MAY own just one too many notebooks! You can find great little journals at TJ Maxx or Marshalls, most under $10, and they also make a wonderful gift. Whether you use them all for journaling or something like a grocery or shopping list, they’re useful and practical.
-It’s the perfect way to ground yourself during the day: Starting your day with journaling is a great way to get started on the right foot, and to get some positive thoughts down on paper. I like to write out positive affirmations, quotes, or even song lyrics when I am journaling to start the day. It is also great to write out goals for the day, which can refocus me from the moment I get out of bed!
