4 Tips for Your Fall Senior Session

Fall is officially here. Well, it’s been official for a bit now, but the colder weather is no reason to skip the fall senior session! In fact, fall is one of the prettiest times to have it, what with all of the leaves turning colors, chances to layer up in the wardrobe, and the pumpkin spice everything! Spring and summer sessions can be more convenient, but no matter when you schedule your senior session, each season is going to present its own unique challenges. Here are 4 of my tips for making your fall senior session perfect!

-Layer up. In fall, things start to get chillier, which is no surprise. This means you’re going to want to cover up against the chill, and this is the perfect opportunity to display a bit of your own personality and a heavy dose of creativity. Pair up the jeans and blouse with a coat and scarf, and have fun mixing and matching colors, using a fall palette. One of the things that some seniors seem to miss out on when they opt for a fall session is a sense of movement and flow to their wardrobe, but this isn’t always true. Dresses with tights, and kimonos over t-shirt dresses still allow for plenty of movement without sacrificing the warmth!

-Think short-term with your locations. Do you have the perfect spot in mind for your fall senior session? Maybe it’s a place surrounded by the most gorgeous trees, with leaves of all colors piling up all over the ground. Well, fall weather can be a bit touchy, depending on where you live, which means you shouldn’t have your heart completely set on any one place, no matter how wonderful it may be. All it takes is one frost or a real strong wind to turn your dream autumn backdrop into nothing but a skeletal arrangement of bare branches and scattered leaves. If you’re scouting around for locations, this is one of those rare times when it may be a better idea to do it later rather than sooner.

-Use the colors. Fall is home to some of the prettiest and most unique colors. As the leaves change, and the landscape starts to lose its lush greens, our wardrobes should change along with it. I love to see senior wardrobes that include the earth tones of the changing landscape; reds, yellows, dark greens, purples, and even pinks make up the fall palette. This is where you can really lean in and show off who you are in your wardrobe. If it’s your thing, evoke the nature around you, and utilize layers to capture the changing seasons in your warmer clothes!

-Plan ahead for the time of day. How many of us are really keeping track of how much daylight we’re losing as the calendar inches closer to winter? Well, I am, but that’s because I’m a photographer. Most people are simply going about their lives, noticing all of a sudden on their drive home from work that the bright sun they’re used to has already set. Thankfully, the sun is very predictable, and it doesn’t take too much to plan ahead for it. When you’re planning your session out with your photographer, be sure to make it clear where you’d like the sun to be for your session. If you get it just right, you can get a beautiful backlight to your pictures that creates this dreamy flare effect. Ask your photographer about it!
