Staying Safe in the Sun
There are some hefty temperature climbs coming up, and it’s important to stay safe as summer gets going! Whether through heatstroke, not preparing, or not planning ahead, summer can be dangerous when you don’t take precautions while on vacation or adventures during such a hot time of year. Here are some ideas to stay safe, and have a great time during this season:
Sunscreen: This is a no-brainer, but is also the thing people forget about most often, especially when it’s slightly overcast or cloudy. This is a common misconception, because you need sunblock to protect you from UV rays, even when there is cloud cover. High SPF numbers are not as important as putting it on regularly. Don’t forget places like the back of the neck and backs of arms and legs, because they are easily burned and often forgotten
Water safety: If you are on a boat or out having fun on the water, make sure everyone on the boat or at the event has a life jacket on or available. Even if you’re a strong swimmer, accidents happen, and it’s best to be prepared for any emergency. If little ones are near the water, be sure to keep an eye out for those who cannot swim.
Hydrate: Staying hydrated is even easier than ever, with plenty of cute water bottles, and cooler totes available to tote around drinks and water jugs. If you find that you haven’t had much water and you’re going to be out in the sun, be sure to bring about 2 liters per person. It seems like a lot, but your body really needs it when the heat begins to climb. Bonus: drinking water also helps your skin, and facial complexion!
Let others know where you are: If you are super outdoorsy, and plan to go hiking or to the lake with friends, be sure to tell at least one person where you are. It is a great safety plan that someone knows your location in case there was any sort of emergency, and you needed to be located. Make sure you activate your GPS on your phone and bring a spare charger if you’ll be out for the day.
Lastly, follow the law: Many summer activities like boating, biking, or water sports have specific local laws that you’ll want to check out beforehand. This prevents any accidental mishaps, and things like parking tickets or fees you didn’t know about.
Have a safe and healthy summer!
